The First Day

It was May 15th, 2023. I woke up, like any normal day, and went for a run before work. I got to work and started my day like any other day.

My coworker had to leave for an appointment, and she was coming back to the office.

I had this feeling…

I called her and asked her if she could grab a pregnancy test on her way back to the office. “Yes, of course, I’m late for my period too. We will take them together!”

She comes back to the office- we both take the tests and come out of the bathrooms- we look at each other and she says to me, “Did you look at yours yet?”

Neither of us had looked… We decided to put them in the box and wait the 5 minutes. I couldn’t wait the 5 minutes.. I dumped them out of the box and looked at her. “Dude, one of them is positive.”

The look on her face was priceless. Now one of us had to go take another test. She immediately opted me to go take another one.

So I did- positive in less than 30 seconds…

Now, I have so many emotions. Scared. Shocked.

I have to make sure this is real. This can’t be real. There’s no way.

I called The Women’s Center and they got me in for a blood draw that afternoon. I left work early, and went to my appointment.

At around 6:30, Dr. William Ellis, bless his soul, called me and said

Hello, my dear, it looks as though your HCG is beautifully elevated!

Dr. William Ellis

My face went pale, and it was all so surreal. Now, I have to tell Dalton! How in the world am I going to tell him? We weren’t planning for this. We weren’t expecting this.

So, I waited. I waited for him to come home. I went and bought a onesie that said Love = Family. I put it on a teddy bear that his grandmother had bought for him when he was a young lad. I wrapped it up in a bag and awaited his arrival home.

I texted him and told him that I had something to tell him when he got home.

The second he walked in the door, I could read his body language. He was tense.

“So what is it that you have to tell me?”

“Well, ummmmmm….” I hesitated.

“Wait. Let me guess. You’re pregnant?”

“Actually, um, yeah.”

He was just as shocked as I was. He felt as though we were unprepared to be parents. But how do you really know if you’re ready to be parents? I mean, after all, two pink lines and a confirmed blood pregnancy test mean that whether you’re ready or not, it’s happening.

That evening was a bit tense around our house, as we were still trying to take it all in and process the fact that we were in fact

Going. To. Be. Parents.
